Are you facing an impossibly hard decision? Or do you feel so overwhelmed with a decision you have to make that you have just shut down? Recently I started using a discernment journal when I feel that pull towards indecision. And today I am going to share how I make really hard decisions with God and give you the journal I use to do so!
The term discernment is frequently used in a Catholic context in reference to making the decision to enter religious life. But we should use discernment in any difficult decisions we face.
As with everything, we should start the discernment process with prayer. I’ve included two of my favorite discernment prayers on the first page of the journal.
Next, I reflect. This just means I write down everything (and I mean EVERYTHING) that’s on my mind about the decision. I try to write at least three pages. Even if I think I’ve run out of things to write down, I just let my brain loose on the page.
After my brain is clear, I make an old-fashioned pros and cons list for my first option. (I like to do the next step before I move on to the next option, but you can make your pros and cons lists for each of them at the same time.)
With a list of pros and cons in hand, I then answer three strategic questions.
So often, fear holds me back from making a hard choice. But writing down those fears and praying about them makes them less powerful.
Next, I repeat the pros and cons list and questions with all other options. (I’ve included pages for 3 options in the download, but you can print out more if you need to.)
Finally, I write another three pages of reflection.
And of course, I finish with prayer. I’ve included a closing prayer in the download.
If you still don’t feel ready to make your decision, pray and go through the journal again in a few days (if you have time to wait). I promise you, you can make really hard decision with God and I hope this journal helps you!
